I've read all the reviews about the Galaxy; you can expand the storage with an SD card.  I read on pocket lint a comparison review of both phones and they are pretty much neck and neck; Mergeis cheaper, Galaxy has better video capture, bigger screen, but more plasticky case...it's all a case of horses for courses I guess.

I've read a good handful of independent reviews comapeing the Mergeand the Galaxy S - and the bottom line almost always was that all things considered the Mergeis better...

I'm taking my phone home tomorrow. What I've been thinking about today is how to test it... My first idea was to start slow: not to install any applications that are not pre-installed, not to use anything that would stretch the cpu too much - and see if the device works well. And if it does than start to push it a bit: install apps, run apps of higher cpu demand, etc...
but then I realized it might not be the best strategy. If the phone has really been healed than correct usage shouldn't cause any problems, even if they put some (but not too much) strain on the cpu, right? If i start slowly then I just let the potential problems linger on unnoticed for longer... So, I guess, I'll let it alone for a day or two then start using it normally. I'll reinstall (most of) my apps and use them like i should - and see...

Though, knowing my luck, I'm soooooo sure the phone will reboot right after I took it home...

What do you all think of the Samsung Galaxy?

It's a great-looking phone that suffers from a few problems, one of which is a non-working assisted GPS that's now supposed to be fixed.

If you're thinking of getting one, it's probably worth googling for "Samsung Galaxy problem" first

I'm tied into an 18 month contract with my Mergefirst so no rush to change!

Bio,

Be sure to check if the IMEI (or the serial number) has changed.  If they replaced the MoBo, the papers should state an "IMEI in" and "IMEI out" number.  If they replaced the MoBo, it should work just fine.

Treat it like you normally would.  Putting excess strain on the CPU (even for testing purposes) is never a good idea due to the lack of cooling.
Be sure to calibrate the battery, as you're dealing with a new OS that doesn't know it's limitations or your usage pattern yet.  (which is another reason to use the phone like you normally would)

Thanx for all the advice! This IMEI-thing was a particularly useful one! According to the tracing service of the rapair company's home page they did, indeed, replace the mobo, so it really should have a different IMEI.

As for testing the device - i didn't intend to put anything more than my normal workload on it - which is not too much I guess, about a rough medium...

Just for laughs: has anyone of you thought of it how much more annoying this RR thing would be if we had IPhones? I mean, you may not (and in theory cannot) remove the battery, for a start - the only real immediate remedy for RR... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

My mergekept on rebooting when using the navigation software with GPS on as well as with it off and just using 3G. Sent back to HTC, they wont tell me what was done but the problem is still there, could be an overheating issue, but i won't be getting another one, going to sell it on eBay and continue to use my Nokia E90 Communicator, the most reliable phone i have ever had next to my experia X1. I did try an Iphone for about a week, as a phone it's the worst ever, gave it back and canclled the contract. might be looking at the new Samsung Galaxy for navigation and car phone in the new year, as i have a Samsung Q1 Ultra with 3G and its tops.
